Posted on 08 May 2011

Military inventions are contraptions made to better and progress military tactics, missions, or overall existence. Some of military inventions include things like high-tech military airplanes, nuclear bombs, ballistic missiles, and such like. Most of these inventions have proved quite an achievement.  However, there are others inventions that came a cropper.

The Leading Ten

1. USS Macon/USSAkron

USS Macon USSAkron

Position one is taken by Flying Aircraft Carrier- USS Macon/USSAkron. It was crafted by German engineers in 1930s. It took first flight in 1933.

2. Rocket Belt

Rocket Belt

Rocket Belt, comes second. It was made in USA, and was intended to allow soldier to travel safely over a very small distance.

3. Charles de Gaulle

Charles de Gaulle

French made Aircraft Charles de Gaulle, takes position three.  It was supposed to be an aircraft that used new and improved technology. It was the first nuclear-powered carrier built outside of the U.S. navy.

4. Tsar Tank

Tsar Tank

Russian Tsar Tank comes fourth. A tank designed like a tricycle. It was anticipated to cross significant obstacles.

5. Cybernetic walking machine

Cybernetic walking machine

Cybernetic walking machine, made in USA takes position five.  It was an experimental quadruped robot that was tested in 1968.

It was designed to help the infantry carry weapons over extremely tough terrain.

6. Puckle Gun

Puckle Gun

At position six is Puckle Gun created by Briton James Puckle. The gun was able to shoot 63 shots in 7 minutes as compared to more common three shots per minute, which was standard on the soldier’s musket.

7. Focker-Wulf Triebfluegel

Focker-Wulf Triebfluegel

German Focker-Wulf Triebfluegel comes seven.  It was designed during WWII, and was a form of a working helicopter.

8. French- Scooter-mounted Cannon

French- Scooter-mounted Cannon

Position eight is reserved for French- Scooter-mounted Cannon. It was made when French military was lacking money for sophisticated equipment. It was scooter-like vehicle that held a 75mm cannon

9. One-wheel tank/Ball Tank

One-wheel tank Ball Tank

Position nine is taken by German One-wheel tank/Ball Tank.  It was made to allow a single person to use two machine guns while inside a heavy armed sphere

10. Corkscrew Tank

Corkscrew Tank

Lastly, at position ten is Russian Corkscrew Tank.  It was made to ride across rough, rocky, and harsh terrain. Some of these inventions were used for some time while others were never used.

Limited Use

Some of these that used for limited time comprised: USS Macon; Rocket Belt; Puckle Gun; Focker-Wulf Triebfluegel; Scooter-mounted Cannon; and Corkscrew Tank

Never Used

Those that were never used and some remained at prototype stage included: Charles de Gaulle; Tsar Tank; cybernetic walking machine; and one-wheel tank/Ball Tank

What Went Wrong?

Most of these inventions failed due to structural and design problems, this was particular so to USS Macon, Charles de Gaulle, Tsar Tank, Focker-Wulf Triebfluegel, Scooter-mounted, One-wheel tank/Ball Tank; Corkscrew Tank.

Puckle Gun failed because British gunsmiths at that time couldn’t easily make the many complicated components, so mass production was impossible. Rocket Belt Rocket Belt was overtaken by advances in military technology like the invention of jet, this made it less endearing for the military.
