Being an active member of military you are able to get a deferment on your student loans. You can only have a deferment if you are active in the Army, Navy, Air Force, or other military branch. You can have military deferments for up to three years. However, you can only have deferments for one year at a time. In order to continue to get the deferment you must have to reapply every year. Students who have joined services in the Reserves can get a repayment of up to $20,000. Each year 15% of your student loan balance or $500 will be paid by the student loan repayment plan, depending on the fact that which one is greater.

Following are the few requirements that are necessary to be fulfilled by the Military personnel who want to take benefit of these services.

  • At least 50 marks should be taken by the student on the Armed Forces Qualification Test.
  • He or she has to apply for the loan repayment program at the time that he or she enlist or reenlist in the military.
  • Federal loans for education or consolidation loans are eligible for the repayment program. However, the repayment program does not accept private alternative loans.
  • Those loans, on which you are in default, are not accepted for the repayment program.
  • Before that you enlist yourself in military and use the loan repayment program, it is necessary for you to ensure that all of your payments are current.
